Wild Strawberry
A ground hugging herbaceous perennial groundcover native to the Rocky Mountains. It grows 4-7" tall and spreads with stolons. It has dark green three lobed leaves with red stems and white flowers thru the summer. It then provides a bounty of small but tasty strawberries that can be eaten raw or cooked into pies. It is one of the parents of commercial strawberries. Shipped in their 2 3/8"x3 3/4" pots. Zones 3-9

Plant arrived within days of shipment, very healthy. For all you plant nerds out there, I can confirm this is the virginiana glauca subspecies--the original source of the day-neutral gene in garden strawberries like Albion, Seascape, Mara des Bois, etc. Came with flowers on it mid-July, which wouldn't have happened with virtually any other individuals of the species available on the market, which just fruit in June. Given this subspecies is adapted to mountain conditions, it prefers better drainage and is even more susceptible to root rot than your average strawberry--I have mine in a mix of essentially equal parts potting soil, compost, cactus mix, and orchid mix. It's doing fabulously, although I should mention I clipped off the flowers upon arrival so it can establish more before fruiting again.

The wild strawberry plants were very healthy on arrival, and I put them straight into the ground. I'm delighted to be replacing lawn with a beautiful native groundcover, and I look forward to watching the critters enjoy the berries!
